Master of Engineering

The Master of Engineering (M.E.) Program in Biological Engineering provides students an opportunity to develop an area of expertise through advanced study.

The M.E. may be done immediately after the undergraduate program to provide the student access to employment opportunities not available to the B.S. graduate. Or, the M.E. program works well for individuals who are mid-career and want to update their education and develop expertise in a new area. For this student, many of the courses may be available through the UM system and through distance learning.

Entrance Requirements

An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 hours of course work is required for admission. Exceptions to the GPA requirements for promising students include such factors as experience, time since completion of the undergraduate studies, standardized test scores, etc.

Completion of the GRE with scores acceptable to the department is required for admission. In addition, prospective students must take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) no longer than five years prior to application to the M.E. program. The Biological Engineering faculty prefers prospective M.E. students to have received a 1,100 combined score of verbal and quantitative sections and an analytical writing score of 4.0 on the GRE.

M.E. Degree Requirements

  • Candidates for the M.E. degree in Biological Engineering are expected to have a B.S. degree in engineering.
  • At least 36 hours of graduate level credit are required.
  • A minimum of 15 hours must be at the 8000 level or above.
  • A minimum of 21 hours must be from the College of Engineering.
  • A maximum of six hours may be accepted from another institution. However, up to 18 hours may be accepted from another University of Missouri system institution.
  • The program must be completed within eight years.
  • Candidates for the M.E. degree must maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing.
  • A maximum of 16 hours per semester and eight hours per summer may be carried by a full-time student.
  • Because the goal of the M.E. program is to better prepare the individual for the practice of engineering, the student must as part of the program complete a major engineering design project. This design project may be completed at the University under the direction of a faculty adviser or may be completed as an internship away from campus and under the joint direction of a company supervisor and a faculty member.
  • All M.E. degree candidates will present a design project exit seminar, open to internship participating company representatives, students and faculty prior to final degree approval.

Financial Support

The Biological Engineering Program has a limited number of Graduate Research Assistantships for qualified students.

Application for a graduate assistantship is part of the Program application.
